When DIY Skincare Recipes can sometimes be Harmful to your Health

When DIY Skincare Recipes can sometimes be Harmful to your Health

In a world where things are overly manufactured and we have turned to chemicals for immediate (and often poor) results, our inclination is to revert back to that which is natural

However, you may be surprised to learn that even with ‘natural’ ingredients, if used incorrectly or not properly diluted, it can cause irreversible damage to our skin.

Our skin is an organ. Just like you wouldn’t simply ingest chemicals as that may cause damage to your liver and kidney, we also have to be very careful about what we apply onto our skin.

My strong advice is not to DIY your own skincare and to scrutinise the processes adhered to by any skincare brand when choosing skincare products.

A product that is not formulated correctly can cause irritation, and products that aren’t laboratory tested may grow microbes (which we can’t see with our naked eye).

Ewww … Is that enough to make you wince?

At Melvory, we believe in the inherent quality of naturally derived ingredients. There are some things provided for in abundance within nature, which man-made substitutes cannot replace.

However, at Melvory we are also careful to process and treat these natural ingredients using the strictest industry standards. When we take natural ingredients out of its natural environment to produce skincare products, preservatives are sometimes necessary to ensure a stable shelf life, and also to prevent bacterial and mould growth. In such instances, we use the next best alternative: Australian certified organic type preservatives.

Here, we explain for you how we balance both of these aspects in creating our products.

How Natural is Melvory’s Natural Skincare Range?

All our ingredients are compliant with Australian Organic Certifications. We don’t use any parabens, synthetic preservatives or toxic artificial fragrances in any of our products.

For fragile ingredients and for products that contain water (where mould or bacteria may easily grow), we use natural preservatives that are compliant with the Australian Certified Organic (ACO) certification process.

We strive to keep our products as natural as possible so that our hero-ingredients can shine through!

How can We be Assured that Melvory’s Natural Skincare Range is Safe for Use?

Formulation Assurance: the ingredients we use in our top secret formulations 😉are checked against scientific databases (not Dr Google!). They are checked for efficacy (clinical evidence that the ingredient is effective) and also for safety. They are checked by a registered Pharmacist, someone who has an in-depth knowledge of how different ingredients react with each other and to the skin.

Our products are regularly sent for independent microbes and heavy metals testing; be assured that they all come back negative.

We also comply with mandatory standards for ingredient labelling of cosmetics as per the ACCC, which basically means we list all our ingredients for you to see and there are no hidden surprises.

Procedural Assurance: we adhere to GMP ISO 22716:2007, which is the international standard for Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP) for cosmetics. As an analogy, this is similar to that of a registered commercial kitchen for food-based businesses.

In practical terms, it looks like this:

  • we produce and package your skincare in a dedicated sterile room
  • we wear appropriate attire (think hair net, masks, lab coats, gloves)
  • we use clinical grade tools and equipment
  • we use scales to weigh ingredients accurately
  • we sterilise all our stainless steel and glass equipment 4 times before being used for production

When you use our products, you can be assured that our products are produced with the utmost hygiene and precision to ensure it’s effective and safe for use. We combine the best of both worlds, and have created a 100% natural, pharmacist formulated skin-care range for you.
