Clay Masks are very popular in the skincare world.

You may have seen them in the beauty aisle, tried one or two different masks with varying results, or consider yourself a committed convert who regularly uses clay masks in your skincare routine.

For those who have never tried using a clay mask or are wondering whether they should use it on a more regular basis - we’d love to arm you with more information about how and why they work.

How Clay Masks Work

Melvory clay masks

Clay masks are known for their ability to detoxify, cleanse, and refresh the skin.

The science behind how they work is quite fascinating - read on for a Science lesson that we can get on board with!

Clay masks are usually made using clays such as Bentonite, Kaolin, and Illite. These clays carry a negative charge, which is the key to their effectiveness.

Skin impurities such as toxins, bacteria, and excess oils tend to carry a positive charge.

When you apply a mask, a chemical reaction occurs … much like a magnet! The negatively charged clay particles bind to the positively charged impurities.

In this way, clay masks are great for drawing impurities from the skin!

Why You Should Use a Clay Mask

Benefits of Clay Masks

Here are the top 5 reasons why you should consider using a clay mask.

  • Detoxifies your skin: The clay acts to absorb dirt, oil and toxins from the surface of your skin. As the mask dries, it pulls impurities from your pores, giving your skin a deep cleanse.

  • Unclogs Pores: The clay draws out excess oils and dirt, helping to clear the pores, thus preventing breakouts and leaving your skin feeling refreshed.

  • Reduces Excess Oils: Clay masks are excellent for oily or combination skin types, because they absorb excess sebum (skin oil) without stripping the skin of its natural moisture.

  • Improves Skin Texture: Regular use of clay masks can smooth out your skin’s texture, helping it to look more refined, while minimising the appearance of pores.

  • Boosts Circulation: As the mask dries and contracts, it encourages blood flow to the skin’s surface. This is what gives you that much loved healthy glow post-treatment!

Who Should Use a Clay Mask?

Those Who'll Benefit from its use

Clay Masks will especially benefit those who have:

  • Oily or Acne-prone skin, as it reduces oiliness and unclogs pores to prevent breakouts.

  • Dull Skin as it refreshes and revitalises your complexion.

  • Congested pores as it helps remove the buildup of dirt and toxins that cause blackheads and whiteheads.

Both masks look great, which one should I get?

The two formulations are similar in that they both work to detoxify your skin.

If you are mainly looking to detoxify your skin, we recommend the Matcha Sorbet Detox Clay Mask which is formulated with three different types of clays - all working in combination to detoxify your skin.

If you are looking for a brightening effect in addition to detoxifying your skin, we recommend the Strawberry Sundae Brightening Clay Mask which contains Bentonite Clay (known for its brightening effect) as well as Bearberry extract (which helps to lighten pigmentation).

If you're still unsure which one to get, why not give both of them a whirl?

How do I Use a Clay Mask?

There are a few different ways to use your clay mask too!

If you find that you're generally oily / combination across your T Zoneyou may choose to apply the mask just to that zone.

The mask can also be applied to stubborn spots that pop up, as it may serve to soothe and calm them down.

Or you can choose to use your mask in the more conventional way ... Using the free bamboo brush provided with your clay mask, apply the mask to clean skin evenly across your face and leave on until dry. Wash the mask away with a wet face cloth or for extra smoothness, exfoliate with our Walnut Konjac Sponge.

Generally we recommend using your mask post cleansing, but before your serums and moisturisers.

How Often Should I Use a Clay Mask?

Using a mask 1-2 times a week can help you to maintain clear, balanced and radiant skin.

If you regularly use our Collagen Honey Mask, we recommend alternating it with the Clay Mask for deep hydration and wrinkle-smoothing benefits.

We've created some mask sets for even more savings, especially for our mask-loving community!

We'd love for you to try them out - let us know what you think!
