Why a Natural Moisturiser with SPF 15?
Melvory's Day Cream SPF 15 provides very good sun protection (SPF 15 means 94% of UV blocked) whilst not requiring as much zinc oxide which, as seen in some other brands where the sunscreen leaves a white, chalky streak on your skin. Combined with other amzing natural ingredients, our Day Cream is lightweight and glides on smoothly without leaving a trace of oil or white powder.
SPF 15 VS SPF 30
SPF 15 blocks 93% while SPF 30 blocks 97% of UV rays. SPF 15 means that for someone who would typically burn within 15 minutes of direct sun exposure, it should take 4 hours to burn when protected by an SPF 15 lotion.
SPF 30 would take 8 hours of sun (double the time before burning happens). However please note that the amount of protection in reality depends upon both the SPF rating and the thickness or amount which is applied.
Another way to explain the effectiveness of sun protection is that SPF 15 allows 7% of UV through, while SPF 30 allows 3%, so a reduction of 50%.
Physical Sunscreen VS Chemical Sunscreen
There are two main types of sunscreens. Firstly, natural sunscreens that use Zinc Oxide or Titanium Dioxide as a physical barrier that reflect the sun. The second type, which are chemical sunscreens, use "UV Filters" that absorb high energy UV radiation and emit low energy radiation.
Chemical sunscreens use one or more chemicals including oxybenzone, avobenzone, octisalate, octocrylene, homosalate and octinoxate.
With these chemicals, it is important to ask questions such as:
1. Will this cross the skin and get into the blood stream?
2. Does this chemical have the potential to disrupt hormones?
3. Are there long-term effects or allergy reactions to these chemicals?
This new research by the EWG reveals that the chemicals commonly used in sunscreen are endocrine disruptors, estrogenic and may interfere with thyroid and other hormone processes in the body.
The EWG warns against using oxybenzone, especially on children or pregnant/breastfeeding women.
Many sunscreens also contain methylisothiazolinone, which the American Contact Dermatitis Society named as its “allergen of the year”.
For these many reasons, Melvory's Research Team decided to avoid such chemicals and to use non-nano zinc oxide and raspberry seed oil as active ingredients instead, for a safe and natural sun protection.
The Safest Option: Cover Up
Wear a hat and sunglasses when you're out, bring an umbrella along, and if you have sensitive skin, go with a physical sunscreen containing non-nano Zinc Oxide that reflects the UV radiation away.
Zinc Oxide would normally be white on the skin. We use a special type of Zinc Oxide made here in Australia that is dispersed within raspberry seed oil and carrot seed oil which helps make it invisible and not chalky.
